Whether or not this is an "outstanding" institution is a matter of opinion. Suffice to say that a substantial percentage of each years incoming freshman class is functionally illiterate or innumerate and must take remedial reading or arithmetic courses. Moreover, at least one important member of the college administration holds to the KKK version of history and insists that the Civil War had nothing to do with slavery.

What a crazy comment to make about Sylvania! I guess it all depends on how you define "the gospel." The gospel Sylvania preaches is that all people are by nature sinners who have offended a holy God by failing to glorify Him as they should and are therefore objects of God's wrath, fully deserving of eternal punishment. But God, being rich in mercy, in His infinite love, because it pleased Him, gave up His own Son as a sacrifice who would pay for the sins of all who trust that His death on the cross was good enough to reconcile them to God. Sylvania preaches that this death transfers our sin to Christ and Christ's righteousness to us, thus giving to us completely apart from our works or earning, the righteousness that is required to have fellowship with God and inherit eternal life in heaven with Him. Sylvania doesn't preach a gospel that says God plans to give every human earthly health and earthly riches (see the life of Jesus and the apostles in the New Testament and also http://www.desiringgod.org/ResourceLibrary/TasteAndSee/ByDate/2007/1993_Prosperity_Preaching_Deceitful_and_Deadly/) or that He wants us to find the good that's naturally within us (see Romans 3:10-20). Instead, Sylvania points people away from any sufficiency that is within them toward the all-sufficiency and infinite beauty and greatness of the Lord Jesus Christ, who has done for us what we could not and would not do for ourselves. And why does Sylvania teach that way? Not to beat people into discouragement over sin, but to see God bring about a healthy, humble recognition of sin before God that they may unleashed to bring great glory to God by finding their deepest satisfaction in Him. This is the great truth of the gospel according to the Bible that Sylvania Church preaches and teaches without hesitation or apology!
